About John W. Odom, MD

Dr. John Odom previously served as a general and trauma surgeon in the United States Army. He is widely recognized for his expertise in repairing complex and large hernias. Training the next generation of surgeons is a priority for Dr. Odom, who has been named Teacher of the Year at the Medical College of Georgia on three separate occasions and was instrumental in bringing the Mastery of General Surgery Fellowship to St. Joseph’s/Candler. He has also served as president of the medical staff at St. Joseph’s/Candler and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Odom earned his undergraduate degree in zoology from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus and then received his Doctor of Medicine from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Odom did his internship in general surgery at New York Medical College, Metropolitan Hospital in New York, NY, followed by a residency in general surgery at New York Medical College, Cabrini Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Odom did his fellowship in trauma and critical care at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Odom is license to practice in Georgia. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Association of Military Surgeons, Eastern Society for Trauma, Georgia Medical Society, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Southeastern Medical Society.
