There are several diagnostic tests we may use to assess your heart health. Many of these can be performed right in our offices for your convenience. Below are some of the most common tests we offer:
Heart palpitations are one of the most common concerns we hear from patients—a "racing" or fluttering sensation or a skipped beat that briefly takes your breath away. If you experience these symptoms, your cardiologist may recommend a Holter monitor to track your heart's rhythm for 24 to 48 hours. This test involves attaching electrodes to your chest that record your heart’s activity. It is painless and easy to wear, even while sleeping. Once your monitoring period is complete, your cardiologist will review the data to determine if any treatment is necessary. In some cases, the solution may be as simple as reducing caffeine intake.
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a fundamental test that evaluates your heart's electrical activity. It is typically administered to all new cardiology patients. This test is painless and requires no special preparation. However, it is important to inform your doctor of any medications you are taking, as some can affect the accuracy of the results. During the test, you will lie down while electrodes are attached to your arms, legs and chest. These electrodes monitor your heart’s electrical signals to help detect irregularities such as an abnormal heart rate. Your physician will review the results immediately and discuss any necessary next steps with you.
An echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound imaging test that provides a detailed picture of your heart. It helps assess your heart muscle function, valve performance and overall heart size and shape. This test is often performed alongside an EKG to give a comprehensive view of your heart’s condition. The procedure is painless and takes about 30 minutes. A technician glides a small transducer over your chest, sending sound waves that create a visual image of your heart. In some cases, a harmless contrast agent is injected to provide a clearer view of blockages or scar tissue. Your physician will review the results and discuss any findings with you.
A treadmill stress test evaluates how your heart functions under exertion and can identify potential problems such as blocked arteries, blood flow issues or coronary heart disease. During the test, electrodes are placed on your chest to monitor your heart’s activity while you walk on a treadmill. The speed and incline gradually increase to simulate physical exertion. If you feel dizzy or overly winded, the technician will stop the test immediately. You should wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring your inhaler if you use one. Your physician will discuss the findings at your appointment and determine if further tests are needed.
A nuclear stress test is an advanced diagnostic tool used to assess blood flow to your heart and detect coronary artery disease. Before the test, you may be asked to avoid caffeine for 12 hours and refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours. Your doctor will provide guidance regarding any medications you take.
During the test, a small amount of radioactive dye is injected via IV. Electrodes are attached to your chest, arms and legs to track your heart’s electrical activity. Initially, images are taken while you are resting. If you cannot exercise, a medication is used to simulate physical exertion. Otherwise, you will walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed and incline. A second injection of dye is then administered, and another set of images is taken to evaluate your heart’s functionality.
The results will help your doctor determine if you have coronary artery disease or other heart conditions. After the test, you can resume normal activities and drink water to help flush the dye from your system.
