Aging and hearing loss

Hearing You is Loving You

The expert audiologists at Georgia Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists can help your loved ones hear better again.

We know it's difficult when people realize their loved ones' hearing just isn't the same as it once was. We hear about it from people every day. And it's also a natural part of aging, but we have solutions.

Have you experienced this with your parents or loved ones?

  • They have difficulty understanding words in background noise, such as at a restaurant
  • They trouble understanding what people are saying over the telephone
  • They continually need to turn up the volume on the TV or radio
  • They frequently think others are mumbling
  • They often ask people to repeat themselves
  • They might avoid social situations

At Georgia Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists, our board-certified and fellowship-trained physicians and audiologists can diagnose and treat complex ear problems and assist in finding the right hearing aid solutions for you.

Age-related hearing loss

Age-related hearing loss, also called presbycusis, comes on gradually as a person grows older. It seems to run in families and may occur because of changes in the inner ear and auditory nerve, which relays signals from the ear to the brain. Presbycusis may make it hard for a person to tolerate loud sounds or to understand what others are saying. Age-related hearing loss usually occurs in both ears, affecting them equally. Because the loss is gradual, people with presbycusis may not realize they have lost some of their ability to hear.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is also common in older people. It is typically described as ringing in the ears, but it also can sound like roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing. It can come and go. It can be heard in one or both ears, and it may be loud or soft. Tinnitus is sometimes the first sign of hearing loss in older adults. It can accompany any type of hearing loss.
