Pediatric Hearing Testing

What to expect: Pediatric Hearing Testing

Your child is scheduled for a hearing test with an Audiologist (before seeing the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist). This was recommended for possible reasons such as speech delay, failed hearing screening, ear infections or hearing concerns.  Here is what to expect:

  • We will ask questions to gather information on medical and developmental history for your child
  • We may look in your child’s ears and take pictures of their ears with special machines to gather information on their middle ear health and inner ear function.
    • The tests work fastest if your child is quiet and still.  We have toys and videos available to help your child sit quietly.
  • Your child will sit in a quiet test booth with a parent or guardian and be asked to listen for sounds either through the speakers or while wearing earphones
  • Method of testing is chosen for your child’s developmental level.  They may sit on your lap or in a highchair and be taught to listen/look for sounds, they may sit at a table and be taught to throw a block into a bucket when they hear a sound or they may be taught to raise their hand/push a button when they hear a sound
  • For accurate testing, the test booth must remain quiet and therefore only you and your child can be in the test booth.  Siblings are not allowed in the test booth as they can distract your child while listening.  If you must bring siblings along to the appointment please bring someone to watch them while you sit in the test booth with your child.
  • Testing usually takes about 15-20 minutes depending on test results and child’s cooperation
  • We will review the results and recommendations and answer questions after testing is completed

Audiology Procedures & Test Methods (Pediatric)

Otoscopy - A special magnifying light that is used to look in your child’s ear for possible wax in the ear canal. If there is a lot of wax is in your child’s ear canals we may have ENT remove it before the hearing test.

Tympanometry - A soft probe is placed in your child’s ear canal to measure ear drum movement or look for possible middle ear fluid. One ear is tested at time. Tympanometry does not test hearing.

Otoacoustic Emissions - A soft probe is placed in your child’s ear canal and soft sounds are played to evaluate inner ear functioning. This test does not hurt but it is sensitive to room noise and patient noise/movement. We have quiet toys available to help keep your child still and quiet for testing. We test one ear at a time. This is not complete test of hearing; additional testing is needed to determine hearing sensitivity.
